Managing my ADHD Symptoms at Work

As I started the draft of this post, the irony is not lost that, that I am at work, getting through my daily duties.
I felt the need to start this draft while it was still fresh in my mind.

You see, I am still not very good about staying focused on a task when there are so many other tasks that are probably more of a priority. In the following I intended to share what I do to make sure I get my job done, and how I keep track of tasks and duties that need my attention.

Daily Duties

Luckily, I work for an amazing company that expects me to complete my duties by a certain time each day.

As with ADHD, we hope for understanding and patience from our workplace and others. However, I believe that this works both ways. I must understand and respect what my company is doing, what is expected, and how I am to contribute to moving the company forward.

So I make sure I complete everything that is expected of me on a daily bases. If the daily workload goes beyond 5pm, then I will work til it is completed.
Especially, if it is my own fault that I fell behind, because of those damn squirrel moments.
I am always willing to work and stay later to make sure the job gets done.

My job consists of daily tasks that I have to complete each day. Each task can ebb and flow as far as the workload goes. So the routine of knowing the tasks I have to do each day, helps a lot. However, when things change or new and different tasks are added, it becomes more difficult.

Now if a new task is requested to be completed, then I would write the task down on a post-it note, or start a list in my daily note taking pad. When taking these kind of notes, I use a kind of bullet journal marking system.

“•” To Do/Task
• Send Meeting appointment to staff
• Organize Desk

” Files/Attachments needed
• Collect daily sales spreadsheet and send to supervisor.•

“○” Answers Needed/Follow Up
○ Ask Support for help to find out why connection to printer is not working.

As you create your list, you will know that these items/tasks are what is needing to be completed for the day.

Learning this habit has improved my work life tremendously. It has really kept me on track for everything that is expect of me for my daily duties.

If I am given a task that is to be completed day(s) later. I normally write a reminder and due date on a post it and place it where I know I will see it. For example, on my laptop keyboard or my monitor.

What works best for me is to set reminders in my email calendar, or in my iPhone reminders so my iWatch can keep me on task.

Since many with ADHD trouble with “working memory”,

The key is to have a consistent visual reminder that a task is needed to be completed. This can be applied to work and personal life.

Let me know how you keep yourself organized in your daily work and/or personal life.
